On April 29th at 11:00 EDT, the Global Interdependence Center (GIC) will welcome Dr. Charles Goodhart to discuss his recently published book, The Great Demographic Reversal: Ageing Societies, Waning Inequality, and an Inflation Revival (Springer International, August 2020). Dr. Goodhart will be joined by his coauthor, Manoj Pradhan, founder of the macroeconomic research firm Talking Heads Macro, for a presentation and audience Q&A.

In recognition of Dr. Goodhart’s many contributions to the field of economics and his having served as a speaker at GIC’s Central Banking Series Conference in Dublin in 2007, GIC will be presenting Dr. Goodhart with the Frederick Heldring Award for Global Leadership during the event on April 29th. This award, named in honor of GIC’s founder, is presented to individuals who have demonstrated an exemplary commitment to the development of international relations, trade, and global citizenship in their lifetimes.

Dr. Goodhart’s eminent career includes his work at the London School of Economics (LSE) as the Norman Sosnow Chair of Banking and Finance, which he held from 1985 until his retirement in 2002. With Professor Mervyn King, Dr. Goodhart founded the Financial Markets Group at LSE, and he remains a member of that group. Additionally, Dr. Goodhart served as Chief Advisor, as a member of the Monetary Policy Committee, and later as Adviser to the Governor on Financial Stability at the Bank of England.

Dr. Goodhart’s previous publications include two books on monetary history; a graduate monetary textbook, Money, Information and Uncertainty; two collections of papers on monetary policy, Monetary Theory and Practice (1984) and The Central Bank and The Financial System (1995); a number of books and articles on financial stability; and numerous other studies relating to financial markets and to monetary policy and history.

Dr. Goodhart was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), and he is a Fellow of the British Academy (FBA).

In his spare time he is a sheep farmer, an activity he describes as “loss-making.”  I was privileged to be with Charles Goodhart in Dublin in 2007 and hear this description of sheep farming; to this day, I still quote his comments.  BTW, we also had a conversation about monetary policy.  Listeners to this no fee GIC event are in for a real treat.

The public is invited to participate in this virtual event, which will offer a fascinating look at how the global economy is likely to evolve. Please click here to complete your complimentary registration and to submit a tribute to Charles Goodhart to be included in GIC’s virtual tribute book. The GIC staff is happy to assist with the creation of your full-, half-, or quarter-page tribute. This virtual event will serve as GIC’s annual fundraiser. The GIC encourages the expansion of global dialogue and free trade to improve cooperation and understanding with the goal of reducing international conflicts and improving worldwide living standards.
