Western Trip-Part 3. A Simple Call for Action

David R. Kotok
Sun Jul 22, 2018

After my recent travels in several Western states (WY, UT, CO, ID), where I interacted with several hundred folks, participating in panel sessions at the Rocky Mountain Summit in Teton Springs, ID, and engaging in private roundtables with professional and financial industry colleagues and meetings with clients, prospects, and referring consultants, I am impelled to propose a call to action on the subject of immigration.

Cumberland Advisors Market Commentary by David Kotok

I humbly request support for the following two principles, in the form of official statements, resolutions, or other mentions by church elders and other leaders. I seek help and endorsement.

Principles

1. No person is illegal.

People may be undocumented, yes, as they move across national borders out of economic necessity or if they are escaping from life-threatening conditions; but no one is intrinsically illegal. Those who are undocumented deserve careful legal consideration.

2. Yanking a child from a parent is repugnant behavior for a government. It is the single most traumatic event one can inflict on a child, who will likely be scarred for life. This is doubly true when the motivation of the parent is to seek asylum. To separate a child from a parent as punishment for a misdemeanor is both cruel and counterproductive.

If religious and communal organizations of all types – from Salt Lake City to Rome to Jerusalem to London to New York City (headquarters of the Episcopal Church in North America) to Medina (if a new-generation Saudi prince agrees) – adopt these and similar principles and act on them, things may change. Silence and inaction, on the other hand, imply acceptance of the status quo.
