Florida Property Taxes

“As the old Tip O’Neill saying goes, ‘all politics are local’ – and this is no different,” said John Mousseau, executive vice president and chief investment officer at Sarasota, Fla.-headquartered investment firm Cumberland Advisors, of Florida’s Amendment 3. Excluding school properties, this would amend the state constitution to exempt the first $150,000 of a home’s assessed value from property taxes in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028 and thereafter. The amendment also requires 60% voter approval to take effect.

A number of communities have already put a hold on hiring because of the uncertainty surrounding the bill, all while being “woefully behind in infrastructure development,” Mousseau added. “Remember these reductions in property taxes, if passed, will be made up by additional sales taxes – so the whole exercise is a regressive tax,” he cautioned.
