Trump picks former Fed Gov. Kevin Warsh as new Federal Reserve chair

(January 30, 2026) Warsh's previous stint at the Fed, which coincided with the 2008 financial crisis, leaned hawkish, said John Mousseau, chief investment officer for Sarasota, Florida, based Cumberland Advisors, which has $3 billion in assets. The then-governor was initially reluctant to lower interest rates and to buy bonds to help prop up the financial system and the economy.

Experiences forged in crisis can help policymakers be more open-minded, Mousseau told USA TODAY.

"It sounds like he’d be a balanced choice – open to short-term rates but vigilant against inflation," he said. "We know that the battle inside the Fed is between stable employment and keeping inflation low. It’s always a tug-of-war. There's no question that with Warsh, if inflation came back, his hawkish side would show up."
