Cumberland Advisors Week in Review (Aug 23, 2021 - Aug 27, 2021)

Cumberland Advisors
Sat Aug 28, 2021

Dear Clients & Friends,

Thank you for joining Cumberland Advisors for this Friday August 27, 2021 end-of-week update on market conditions, equities & bonds with Executive Vice President & Director of Equity Strategies, Matthew McAleer and Shaun Burgess, Portfolio Manager & Fixed Income Analyst here at Cumberland.

Matt McAleer - Equities / ETFs:
- A lot of ways to make money in the equity market this week...
- Awful news out of Afghanistan. Will it have an effect on market confidence?
- Equity and Fixed Income Markets run on confidence. Matt explains.
- Chairman Powell out today with some commentary (Shaun Burgess will touch on this too) that the Fed will remain patient and watch rather than act for now.
- We have a chart for you...

Broad Global Equity Performance Quilt Chart

- Our chart shows how dominant the S&P 500 has been.
- Don't become so adherent to a position that you can't pivot and change.
- Emerging Markets? There's a chorus behind it, but until we start "to see it", we think being reserved about pushing capital into that area is the correct course.
- "Emerging Markets will go as far as China goes in the long run." - Matt McAleer
- China is having some problems right now, some self-made, some global.
- Have a great weekend!

Shaun Burgess - Fixed Income:
- Busy week with Treasurys responding to a number of events. Shaun weighs in.
- Treasurys for the week, 2yr wound up lower in yield, the 10 & 30yr finished the week higher.
- Powell's comments were perceived as dovish at this point, rate hikes will be data dependent.
- Munis end
the week cheaper. We're looking at this as an opportunity. Shaun explains.
- Next week? Heading into Labor Day we expect things to be quiet with minimal issuance.
- Stay safe, be well, and we look forward to seeing you next week again.

Camp Kotok 2021 from the Capitalogix Blog

Each year I look forward to Camp Kotok, or as I like to call it Economists in Nature. It's basically 5 days of canoeing, fishing, and dining with economists, wealth managers, traders, investors and more.

One of few chances for people from these backgrounds to come together and talk about the world, big trends, investing, economics, politics, and more ... in an open and safe forum. The event goes by the Chatham House Rule - which basically means you can share the information you receive, but not who said it.

Behind the Markets - Camp Kotok Special from 8/13/21

In this Behind the Markets special, we’ll get a roundup of ideas from the annual Camp Kotok meeting in rural Maine—where economists and investment advisors talk shop while fishing and hiking. Host Jeremy Schwartz and Chief Economist at Avalon Advisors Samuel Rines discuss the uncertainty in market forecasting from inflation and employment to the delta variant. How can investors better understand the purpose of the portfolio before making decisions? What are the current transitory trends and how can you position around that?
